The Q-Fiver for November 1998 Volume 40 Number 11 President's message The cool, crisp days of fall have finally arrived. As always, each new season brings new events and opportunities for hams. Hopefully, each of you is active and participating within your own personal special interest group. It is my understanding that classes are going well. This is, of course, due to the efforts of many OH-KY-IN members under the leadership of Carol K8DHK. It is my opinion that these twice-annual classes are a large part of why OH- KY-IN is successful in recruiting young people. I look forward to the latest class members joining our ranks. At a recent membership meeting our guest, Ohio Section Manager Joe Phillips K8QOE, commented on what a fine job the member-ship does of bringing youth into the organization. Now that was one comment I, for one, appreciated. One of my favorite special interest groups would be the DXers. At the next meeting you will have the opportunity to see why. The program will cover the most recent DXpedition. What a great time we had! Another of my favorite groups has to be the Foxhunting group. As most of you know, a group of us hold a monthly transmitter hunt, aka Foxhunt. We are a small but active group. My grandson Addison, age fifteen months, has his first foxhunt under his belt. It wasn't an OH-KY-IN foxhunt but the day isn't far off that he will be along. There is always room for an interested party - - just let us know that you would like to ride along. I would be remiss if I overlooked mentioning the work party that assembled recently to take down an old tower and antennas. They then erected a newer tower and replaced the antennas. Thanks, guys, for pulling together for a fellow ham. Remember the membership meeting, November 3, 1998. I'll be looking forward to seeing you. 73, Dick WB4SUV Next meeting The program for the OH-KY-IN meeting on TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 3, 1998 is this year's K8SCH DXpedition to Avalon Island NJ, presented by Bob WA6EZV. NA-111 set new records for number of contacts (2500) and general success! If you are not able to visit the DXers' web page for the story and pictures, you certainly will want to make this meeting! (Bob is sure to have some photos and stories that wouldn't fit on the web page.) The meeting will be held as usual at 7:30 PM at the Western Hills Church of Christ, 5064 Sidney Road, one block from Glenway Avenue. From town, pass Ferguson Road and turn left on to Sidney between the BP station and Sebastian's restaurant, just before the Frisch's, then turn right at the light into the church drive which leads down to the parking lot. The entrance is at the back of the church building; plenty of parking is available. Please don't forget to VOTE before you come to the meeting! 73, Eric N8YCL October 14, 1998 From: OH-KY-IN Amateur Radio Society Bruce Vanselow N8FWA, 4309 Skylark Drive, Cincinnati OH 45238 (513) 251-1555 For Immediate Release AMATEUR RADIO CLUB OFFERS "HAM" EXAMS Amateur radio license examinations will be given in the Cincinnati, Ohio area by the OH-KY-IN Amateur Radio Society on Saturday, November 21st at the Salem Presbyterian Church in Western Hills. Additions to the web page as on the OH-KY-IN reflector 10.08.98 Hello everyone. I have made some more additions to the web page. I have changed around the top right frame a little bit, there are some new buttons on the bottom left frame, and there is also the current time, date, and weather for Cincinnati, Ohio . There is also a frame with the guest-book on it instead of at the bottom of the main page. Please check it out some time! If you have any comments, or suggestions about any part of the web page please contact me at kc8hqs.dale@juno.com or kc8hqs @angelfire.com. (My spunge.org e- dress isn't presently working.) 73 & TTYL, Dale KC8HQS Here are the results of the October OH-KY-IN Fox Hunt: October 10 was a super day for hunting hidden transmitters. We were even honored to have Eric N8YCL join in on the fun. The foxes were hidden in Sharon Woods. The first fox was set at 50 watts. The fox that gave everyone a hard time was a little third watt unit. Everyone enjoyed the hunt. Eric was fascinated. Dick will be hiding next month. The purpose of this award is to promote and instill proficiency in the art of CW and to also promote an incentive for practice and subsequent license upgrades, thereby fulfilling many of the goals set forward upon amateur radio. This award honors the memory of our beloved silent key N8FU, an amateur radio operator known throughout the world for his skill in CW and particularly within the local amateur community for his warm hearted spirit, always encouraging both prospective and upgrading hams to achieve their fullest. 1. Box 874, New Albany IN 47151-0874 October 8, 1998 Dear Fellow Amateurs: Our organization needs your help. We are looking for Amateur Radio Operators to help complement our emergency communications component during the various incidents which we may respond to. S.M.A.R.T., as we are most commonly known, is an all-volunteer non- profit emergency response team. We are a component of the National Disaster Medical System (NDMS), a program of the Federal government that provides emergency medical care in major disasters. In addition to this responsibility, S.M.A.R.T. also has the capabilities to assist with various local emergencies, such as searches for lost/missing persons and cave rescues. We'll go anywhere we're needed. While we are licensed for several public safety frequencies, we rely most heavily on Amateur Radio for our communications, due to its range and flexibility. Several of our members are licensed hams, and others are studying for their test. How can your club help? Of course, we are looking for public-service- minded hams who would like to become active members of our team. However, we are also looking for "telephone coordinators," hams who would act as a "base station" for us while we are out on an incident. Quite simply, our telephone coordinators monitor a particular frequency and provide a point of contact with our field team's command post, to relay information. While not a requirement, it is desirable that our telephone coordinators have a personal computer and the capability to run our alpha-numeric paging software, so that they can page our personnel as necessary. I would be more than happy to set up a program for one of your club meetings if desired. Please also invite your members to contact me directly if they have questions or are interested in becoming a part of our team. Please feel free to contact me at (812) 284-9179 or e-mail at w9sar@amsat.org. You may also visit our web page at http://mediccom.org/public/~smart/index.html. I look forward to hearing from you.
