The Q-Fiver for March 1999 President's message Years ago, as a young ham, I had the unexpected thrill of working King Hussein. Unfortunately for me I had not a clue as to who JY1 was! After our QSO, someone clued me in -- my regret, of course, is that I didn't realize who he was at the time. Along with the rest of the world, I mourn his passing. Speaking of young hams -- hats off to Laurie Haltermon KF4YWG. This young ham took over the reins and handled Tech Talk recently. Way to go, Laurie! I know that Rick KD4PYR and Jo KD4PYS are proud of their daughter's interest in amateur radio. The reality of it is that the Haltermons are a complete ham family. Laurie's older sister Becky is KG4BDO. Perhaps some of the rest of us have a son or daughter, niece or nephew who would be interested with a bit of encouragement. Remember that OH-KY-IN's spring classes get off to a start February 25th. Maybe this should be the year you get other family m embers involved or perhaps it's time for you to upgrade. Hopefully, you have marked your calendar for the Awards Dinner on March 20th. This promises to be a good evening. Check with Eric N8YCL for details. OH-KY-IN's regular membership meeting will be held March 2d. As always, the program promises to be an interesting one. 73, Dick WB4SUV Next meeting The speaker for the OH-KY-IN meeting on TUESDAY, MARCH 2, 1999 will be Jeff Howell W9SAR of the Special Medical Agencies Response Team, based in the Louisville area. SMART does emergency response, including search and rescue. The meeting will be held as usual at 7:30 PM at the Western Hills Church of Christ, 5064 Sidney Road, one block from Glenway Avenue. From town, pass Ferguson Road and turn left on to Sidney between the BP station and Sebastian's restaurant, just before the Frisch's, then turn right at the light into the church drive which leads down to the parking lot. The entrance is at the back of the church building. Plenty of parking is available. 73, Eric N8YCL New developments re OH-KY-IN web page Hello everybody. I just wanted to let everybody know that I have a redirect address for the OH- KY-IN web page. The web page address has not changed. There are just two different addresses that go to the same place. You can use the new one or the original one. They both work. The new address is: http://k8sch.spunge.org The original address is: http://www.qsl.net/k8sch And while on the subject of the web page, I will be changing around the text colors on the web page soon. I know there is still a few people that are having difficulty making out some of the text. 73 & TTYL, Dale KC8HQS Get that amateur radio license you've always wanted or Upgrade your present license! The fox for the December OH-KY-IN fox hunt was Ernie W8EH, assisted by Lane KC8ECK. There were 4 hidden transmitters, all located within Winton Woods Park. Transmitter one was hidden by KC8ECK on the east side of the park, about 1/2 mile away from Winton Road. It was a little difficult for the hunters to locate. Lane had fun laughing at the hunters beating the bushes. The other three transmitters were located on the west side of Winton Road, at the edge of the water, very close to the highway bridge over the lake. This apparently caused some good reflections. The hunters had some trouble going from the first transmitter to the others. Finally the fox gave a clue that everyone needed to get in their cars to find the other transmitters. They all eventually found the right location and chased down those little foxes. New country -- If you happen to be keeping count, add another one to the DXCC total. Number 332 is E4, Palestine. It will be added to the DXCC List effective October 1, 1999. Contacts made with E4 stations after February 1, 1999, will count for this new entity. Under the DXCC rules, contacts with the deleted entity of Palestine made prior to June 30, 1968 do not count for this entity. There is no commonality of territory or administration. ZL9CI -- Campbell Island -- If you didn't put this one in your log at least once, you must have had your rig turned off. The operation broke records during their operation with some 96,000 QSOs. Glad I am not the QSL manager Hi HI. We went over the checks and vouchers and the records seem to be in very good order. We also checked the certificates and found the 1099 end of year statements missing for two of them. Bill KI4QJ will call on these Monday. We might also state like we do every year that we are indeed fortunate to have such a good treasurer who keeps such nice books. It is scheduled for the 3d weekend in March 1999. If it goes well it will continue to be on that weekend each year. With the Ohio Bicentennial coming up in 2003, CFARC are hoping to have this as an official event and do something special. A copy of the rules as they stood the first of the year appeared in the January 1999 Q-Fiver. There is also a copy on the CFARC web page. A mailing to all 99 Ohio ARRL affiliated clubs should have been made by now. CFARC requests your support of the OH QSO Party on the air that weekend. It took less than 30 minutes for the first three teams to arrive at Ault Park. Dick's first com- ment seemed to set the tone for the rest of the hunt: " Well, what do you have in store for us now?" Sheets explaining that four QRP transmitters, all on different frequencies, had to be found in a different and specific order by each team. Team one, 1-2-3-4, team two 2-3-4-1, etc. This prevented everyone from watching each other for clues. Also all members of each team had to seek the same transmitter at the same time. Transmitters were hidden in bushes, between the two back tires of a truck and inside some construction pipe. The hunt proved a good exercise in sniffing. Appropriate for the day Hi HI. Here are the numbers: Team Miles Arrival Hunt order Final time Dick WB4SUV & Janie 11.2 29 min 1,2,3,4 66 min Brian KE4HOR & Eric N8YCL 12.9 31 min 2,3,4,1 68 min Jim KC8FQY 11.3 33 min 4,1,2,3 73 min Lane KC8ECK & Ernie W8EH 20.4 52 min 3,4,1,2 74 min Author's note: The battery failed on transmitter no. 3 and it had to be removed from the list. Next time new batteries. P.S. Bet next time Jim has a co-pilot. He drove right past two of the parked cars and added that extra tenth of a mile that cost him first place on mileage. Too busy watching his equipment. Dick gets a chance to stump us all next month. Hope it's warm! 73, Bob, WA6EZV Hamfests &c. This enjoyable pastime is shared by many hams worldwide. Here are a couple of ham web sites which specialize in home brew projects. The correct URL is www.intio.or.jp/jf10zl/index.html, and NOT www.intio.or.jp/jf1Ozl/index.html as printed. This is a JA site with English subtitles. Tons of projects!
