Vendors who've paid for their space by April 15 will be listed on the flier. Hamfest committee chairs are seeking help for their responsibility areas. Roger W8CRK commented that the ARRL sees our Hamfest as one that can grow. DXers: Lynn WD8JAW reported that they are trying to schedule the 2000 DXpedition. With any luck, Dick WB4SUV and Bob WA6EZV will be in China in Oct-Nov for the worldwide ARDF competition (they hope to be invited). 4 have committed to go on the Oh-Ky-In DXpedition, the DXers would like 5 or more. The group will have access to all gear that normally goes. They would also like to borrow Dick WB4SUV and Bob WA6EZV's tool boxes. Desired date for the DXpedition is between Sept. 15 to end of Oct, Bob WA6EZV was the last fox; the hunt was supposed to be different. He hoped for 3 transmitters, on for 15 seconds each; find any 2 of 3. This was a logistics hunt. Teams crisscrossed, and the idea almost worked. Ernie W8EH will be the next fox. April 15 weekend is Ntl Foxhunt Days; it'd be nice to run a hunt that weekend (as if we hadn't enough to do then). Gene N8KOJ reported that he knew of no new Silent Keys. Bob WB8W was not present; no workshops report, the library is closed. Harry WA8LOJ reported for the slow-scan net that there are usually 8-9 check-ins with the occasional new person. Bruce N8FWA reported that check-ins to Tech Talk are down a bit. Don't just monitor, check in! Brian KE4HOR reported that the digital side and the wide are doing well. The wide is part of the current repeater upgrade project. No QCEN report. Brian KE4HOR reported for the Technical Committee that various parts are in acquisition, they'd like to be done by the end of April. There is no real need for a meeting this month, he will call if needed. Classes: Carol K8DHK reported that Doug KB8SZS is still taking the General theory. Ken N8ASV still has 1-2 students. Almost everyone else has a CSCE. Harry WA8LOJ reported that the club inventory is in order and all items accounted for. Bob WA6EZV announced that Sweepstakes pins are in, mugs are still awaited. This was the 7th clean sweep in a row. Bob presented the "leftover pen" award to Roger W8CRK, who has fewer than 5 contacts toward the DXCC Millennium Award. Dick WB4SUV has 111, Bob WA6EZV 88. Otto AA8KK and Gene N8KOJ both have well over 100. It's not too late to start; the Millennium competition runs all year. There are 2 new countries, Chesterfield Islands and E Timor. Ken N8ASV suggested working DX in alphabetical order (!). Gene N8KOJ thanked those who've signed up to work the club flea market spaces at Dayton. For the rest of the times, he threatened to just print out last year's sign-ups. Otto AA8KK has another commitment then. He still holds some Icom gear from Vic Stordeur WD8PDX (SK)'s estate. Bob WA6EZV bought the 02AT and power supply. Bill KI4QJ reported that exams Saturday at Hartwell Rec Ctr were well attended with lots of help; 46 individuals took 60-odd elements and just about overran the VE sessions. Next round is this Saturday, 9 AM at Salem Presbyterian Church. Carol K8DHK reported a phone call from Richmond KY about the exams. Any help, even Advanced licensees, is welcome this Saturday. Bill suggested, tongue-in-cheek, that we rent the Convention Ctr for the April 15 exams. 2 sets of Extra VEs will be needed; 1 set to handle the tests and the other set to handle CSCEs and other paper upgrades. Carol K8DHK mentioned that the Hartwell exams were done in 2.5 hours. Christine Sherman, working toward a license, would have won the attendance incentive had she been present. As she was not, the amount in May will be $60. It can pay to attend club meetings! Old business: Reservations are still being accepted for the Awards dinner, Saturday, April 15 at Shuller's. It is my extreme pleasure to congratulate Rick and Jo Haltermon KD4PYR & KD4PYS on becoming this year's Ham(s) of the Year! The Oh-Ky-In Awards Dinner 2000 was a definite success. It was great to see many of you there. We handed out a number of other awards, all quite deserving. Congrats to all for a great job well done in 1999! Well, it is now May and this year is flying! Dayton HamventionR is just around the corner; I know my wallet and pickup truck are ready! Christmas in May! We still need a few volunteers to work the Oh-Ky-In table all 3 days, so please contact Gene McCoy N8KOJ if you are interested in helping out. This month, we will be asking for volunteers to help staff the stations at our annual Field Day event coming up in June. The slots fill up fast; sign up sheets will go around at both the May and June meetings. Sign up soon, it will be here before we know it! See you at the meeting --73, Eric N8YCL Next membership meeting The next meeting of the Oh-Ky-In Amateur Radio Society will be held on TUESDAY, MAY 2, 2000 at the Western Hills Church of Christ, 5064 Sidney Road, one block from Glenway Avenue. What QSL card is your favorite? Was it a tough contact? Did it take 10 years to get it? Is it from a long lost friend? Bring the card and the story to the May meeting, and we will have a session of show and tell. To get to the club meeting, coming from town on Glenway, pass Ferguson Road and turn left on to Sidney between the BP station and Sebastian's restaurant, just before the Frisch's, then turn right at the light into the drive down to the church parking lot. The entrance is at the back of the church building. Plenty of parking is available. 73, Rick KD4PYR Minutes of members' meeting, Tuesday, April 4, 2000 Rick KD4PYR called the meeting to order at 7:34 PM with the Pledge of Allegiance and self-introductions. There were about 50 present. Guest KC8MLP has upgraded to Tech +. There are lots of "Extra Lites" -- FCC reports about 9000 CSCEs. Health and welfare: Al KD4PYQ is recovering from surgery at St Luke's. Bob WA6EZV's grandson's tumor has shrunk (applause). Dues are past due, as of March 31. Completed forms and payment to Lynn WD8JAW. Those wishing to work Scouting for Food and Clothing this Sunday should talk to Bruce N8FWA. Rick KD4PYR thanked Jo KD4PYS and daughters Laurie KF4WYG and Becky KG4BDO for staffing the hospitality table. Minutes of last meeting; Rick KD4PYR commented that Eric N8YCL was surprised to see that he's expected to be the May program. Mike N8CZC moved to accept the minutes as printed in this month's Q-Fiver, Phil KG8AP and Harry WA8LOJ seconded in unison, motion carried. Bill KI4QJ was present to present the treasurer's report (copies distributed). Much is the same. Sales tax is due in 2 weeks, charitable organizations tax return is due May 15. Bill rolled the CD that just matured ($300 interest) into a 15-month at 6.85%. Income for the year so far is $2035.87, expense $1326.21 for net income of 709.66, Hamfest: Lynn WD8JAW announced that tickets are available. Next Hamfest Team meeting is Thursday, April 20, 7:30 PM at Carol K8DHK's. Agenda will include definition of mailing list. Nathan KA3MTT has generated 3 sets of labels for radio clubs in our targ in Oxford last weekend. He thanked Judd N8RVR, Ken N8ASV, Lynn WD8JAW and Bob WA6EZV for their efforts on behalf. Bob got an e-mail thanking the Oh-Ky-In contingent. There were 200 runners, so the club team had to do a fair amount of crowd control; also split times. Carol K8DHK announced that Otto AA8KK's church, Salem Presbyterian where the classes and exams are, will conduct a Lenten Sunday brunch on April 16 from 11 AM-1 PM, $6 per person. Bob WA6EZV reminded those present of the May 7 McFarlan Woods ARDF demonstration. There will be 2 meter and 80 meter activity, see story in April Q-Fiver. Rick KD4PYR thanked the club and his family for their patience during his stint as Assistant Temporary President. He's glad Eric N8YCL is due back momentarily! Stu Press KC8HQT won $23 in split-the-pot. Gene N8KOJ donated some surplus CD-ROM Callbooks for door prizes, won by Ev KC8JR, Mike KC8IVR and Harry WA8LOJ. Come to the meeting next month and see who will join him! Speaking of countries, there have been some great opportunities on the bands this past month. The newest entity, 4W6 East Timor, made its presence known in early April with more operations scheduled. The Chesterfield operation went QRT on March 29 after logging some 72,000 QSOs. This may well be the next official country to join the DXCC list. If you worked this one, you can check the logs at http://www.n4gn.com/tx0dx. Pratas -- BQ9P was also QRV for a week in April. As for countries, are you aware of all the places that count as official entities for DXCC? Check the complete list at http://www.arrl.org/awards/dxcc/. You may be surprised to see that two states are separate entities; Hawaii and Alaska. Warm up the AMPS! From May 1st to the 12th, Bhutan, the #2 most wanted DXCC entity, will be QRV. Being at the peak of cycle 23, everyone should have a chance to work this "most rare" country. Here are the top 5 most needed countries. All I need for a clean sweep is 4 of them HI HI. The high temperature for the day reached around 60 degrees. The April 9 event went very well with 26 amateur radio operators participating on the Cincinnati net. We could have used 2 more operators to staff locations where no communicator was assigned. Bob WA6EZV again did his usual fantastic job as liaison from our net to the control table and phone bank at Goodwill Headquarters. Once again, Rick KD4PYR operated a computer mapping program on his computer at Goodwill Headquarters to assist with plotting locations that requested pickup, in relation to the various loading points around the area. Rick also assisted with liaison duties where needed. This year, the Butler and Warren County nets provided a liaison to and from the Cincinnati net. This proved to be very helpful -- I look forward to working with them in this manner again in future Scouting for Food and Clothing Drive events. On behalf of the OH-KY-IN Amateur Radio Society, Ohio Valley Goodwill Industries, the Dan Beard Council of the Boy Scouts of America, the Great Rivers Girl Scout Council, the Food Pantry and the Free Store Food Bank, I would like to thank all of the amateur radio operators listed below for their participation in making the Scouting for Food and Clothing Drive 2000 a large success. Ernie W8EH was the fox for the April 8 hunt and the "trick" was the weather. The temperature was at freezing with rain followed by snow. We had a bunch of rain the previous day, so lots of mud. Not good conditions for hunters or the fox. The first two transmitters were on 146.565, one on CW the other on voice, alternating transmissions. They were also separated by about 1.75 miles. There were a total of 5 fox transmitters. Transmitter 1 was located at a friend's house in Western Hills, near Boudinot and Veazey. The transmitter was hidden in a van parked in front, with a bright red ribbon on the antenna. After about 2 hours, this transmitter failed, but four teams found it before it failed. Elaine (XYL) and her friends were having fun watching some of the hunters run up the street on foot. This fox would have been easy to find from the car, but there seemed to be lots of reflections in the area. Transmitters 2 through 5 were located in the woods to the rear of N. Fairmont Elementary School on Baltimore Ave. This area forms sort of a canyon; the surrounding hills kept the hunters from getting a direct signal until they got real close. Dick WB4SUV and Janie arrived at the school within 60 minutes. About 20 minutes later Bob WA6EZV arrived, after spending time sniffing around the cemetery on the overlooking hill. Brian KE4HOR arrived shortly after the others and put his daughters to work helping with the sniffing. The difficult part turned out to be the on-foot sniffing. They had the hazardous muddy hills from the rain, and the many reflections bouncing around the "canyon" behind the school. Dick took the high "road" and Bob took the low "road", and Bob got there before him. Brian and daughters followed shortly. The other two teams were close but we were running out of time. Clues were given to allow them to close in and have a chance at the on foot sniffing. Results: Team Time Miles Team Time Miles WA6EZV 126 min 25.6 KC8KIA,WD6ADM & N8OGW 189 min 31.5 WB4SUV & Janie 134 min 17.8 KE4BME & friends 178 min* 29.5* KE4HOR & daughters 148 min 39.3 Note: KE4BME didn't find transmitter 1 before it failed, but he was close. All other teams located all 5 transmitters. N8OGW sniffed separate from WD6ADM and was done a minute (188 min) before WD6ADM. After the hunt, WD6ADM was showing off his new weapon, a rear mounted quad beam with remote control rotator. It has selectable rotation speeds and automatic/manual rotation. He also noted that this is the first hunt that Donna kept the antenna out of the trees. The next hunt will be May 13, at 10 AM with WA6EZV hiding. 73, Ernie W8EH ARDF area training and hunt If you have ever wanted to try this new and challenging form of Fox Hunting, now is your chance. The OH-KY-IN Amateur Radio Society in conjunction with the Cincinnati Orienteering Group (OCIN) will sponsor a demonstration of ARDF followed by a live hunt on Sunday, May 7 at McFarlan Woods in Cincinnati OH. Training and demonstrations will be conducted from 10 AM till 11 AM, followed by a full hunt from 11 AM till approximately 3 PM. Both 80 meter and 2 meter courses will be available along with a limited number of receivers and antennas for both 2 meters and 80 meters. Typical course length will be from 3 to 5 kilometers with a max 2-hour time limit per course. A walk around course for practicing either individually or as a group will also be available using a continuous beaconing transmitter. Bring your handhelds with S-meters, 2 meter directional antennas etc. if you have them. Loaner equipment will be on a first come, first serve basis. I walked into my local Sam's store today and found they had programmable weather radios. I believe they are made by Midland. They were under $50. These are the least expensive I have seen of the newer programmable weather radios. We believe, along with many emergency managers, that NOAA Weather Radio (NWR) provides the best personal warning possible of impending severe weather. Until recently, choices were rather limited. Lately, more models and brands have been making it t o widespread marketing. The bottom line -- severe weather season is here. If you don't have a NWR receiver, you are strongly urged to get one. Michael Nie, Public Information Officer Weather Amateur Radio Network Submission by n8fwa@juno.com to oh-ky-in-ars@qth.net International: The woodpecker returns Just when you thought that you would never hear it again, the radio woodpecker is back. And this time it's from a friendly source that hopes to keep it clear of the ham bands. Maybe. Jeramy Boot G4NJH has more: "During the latter part of the Cold War, a Russian-built over- the-horizon, or OTH, radar system swamped large chunks of the short-wave broadcast and amateur bands. So much so, that some receivers and transceivers were fitted with 'woodpecker' noise blankers. Thanks to perestroika, the use of the system was reduced, and it was eventually tested only rarely. It now appears that the Canadian government, the Canadian Department of National Defence and Raytheon have agreed to use an up-to-date OTH system with a range of about 450km. Because of wide-band interference which enveloped the 80-metre band in eastern Canada and the north-eastern United States, negotiations between sand departments of the Canadian government have resulted in the frequencies being shifted outside the 80-meter amateur band on the 7th of October last year. Moving the frequencies does not remove the problem. However; someone else will be suffering now." While Canada hopes to keep the radar system outside the ham radio bands, many experts believe that it's not going to be all that easy. Oh-Ky-In's policy for dealing with these lids is simple: IGNORE THEM! If you don 't acknowledge their existence, they get bored and go away! If action is needed to prevent abuse of phone patch or other functions, let a control operator handle it.
