Rick KD4PYR thanked Jo KD4PYS for staffing hospitality. Business meeting convened at 8:30 PM. George N8FFV moved to accept the minutes of last meeting as printed in the Q-Fiver, Brian K4BRI second, motion carried. Treasurer's report was passed around for review. Income to date $1806.56, expense $2362.78. Total capital/equity $23,044.19, total liabilities/equity $23,639.08. No sign of Dayton tickets or flea market space advisory yet. Lynn WD8JAW announced the next Hamfest meeting will be Tuesday, May 14. Vendors signed up so far are Judd N8RVR, Don Yoxtheimer KA8QBW and Jo KD4PYS. Bob WA6EZV reported for DX that March was good. Ducie Island made 30K QSOs, San Felix 70K. A DX contest was last weekend. The ex-Soviet Georgian ham in P5 N Korea was just approved for DXCC. Dick WB4SUV announced that this month's fox hunt will be this Saturday. There are some new hounds. The US championship ARDF competition in Atlanta is a qualifier for Slovakia. Dick, Bob WA6EZV and Brian K4BRI are going to Atlants. Albuquerque won the bid for the US last year, Atlanta this year and probably us in 2003. The championship takes 4-5 days with 50-75 competitors, needs a lot of logistics work done. Miami U had offered a good package on initial enquiry; NKU with faculty hams or Thomas More are also possibilities. 12-15 from the Albuquer-que club served as contest staff. Ray W8LKX moved that Oh-Ky-In support the ARDF bid, Judd N8RVR second, motion carried. Bob WA6EZV was the last Oh-Ky-In fox. He made use of the nice nature trails in Winton Woods March 16. First fox was a definite challenge! Ernie W8EH won. Members will have noticed that Jim KC8FQY has engaged a half-page ad in the Q-Fiver for his realty office. Gene N8KOJ had no one to report as a Silent Key. Librarian Jim KC8PRY thanked Mike AC4XS for securing the new copy of the ARRL Operating Manual. As the deluxe edition, it is numbered: 253 of a run of 2000. Harry WA8LOJ reported that the slow-scan ATV net is proceeding normally. Bruce N8BV had the usual requests for check-ins and queries for Tech Talk. WARN will sponsor a weather spotter class this Friday at the Blue Ash Red Cross. QCEN program on April 19 will be operations director Gary Miller, on his cleaning-up experiences at Ground Zero. Meeting will start at 7:30, earlier than usual, program will begin the meeting. Brian K4BRI reported for the Technical Committee that there will be no meeting this month, but there will on Tuesday, April 14 (same as Hamfest Committee). They've a lot to discuss, at his place. Phil KG8AP noted that classes are half finished and half full. PR for the exams is out. Harry WA8LOJ asked if we couldn't sell some of the old club gear we don't really use (like that big generator). If it's not used, why not sell it? Harry will make up a list for the Board. Bob WA6EZV's last computer from the batch at work went to Brian K4BRI for Mt St Joe. Bob WB8JHT won the $20 attendance incentive. Sum returns to $5 next month. Old business: Bruce N8BV still needs a few folks for Scouting for Food & Clothing. New business: Otto AA8KK, Gene N8KOJ and Harry WA8LOJ went to Bill KI4QJ's on March 16 to perform the audit. They found all in good order. Bob WA6EZV mentioned there are still Oh-Ky-In pins for sale. A pin for the ARDF contest we hope to host will go into design, members will want to see it. Mike KG4RXS won $17 in split-the-pot (rookie's luck?) Brian K4BRI moved to adjourn at 9:03 PM, Bob WB8JHT second, motion carried. Respectfully submitted, Susie Scott N8CGM, Recording Secretary Scouting for Food and Clothing Drive - 2002 For the second year in a row, the weather forecast for the Scouting for Food and Clothing Drive was not looking very good. But, again the weather turned out to be much better than what was expected. It rained quite a bit in the morning but for the most part it cleared up and the rain stayed away while the event was in operation. We ended up with overcast skies and temperatures in the low to mid 60's. The dinner gives us a chance to thank and be thanked for all of the volunteer work done on behalf of the club. Thanks to the Awards Committee for all of their work in pulling the event together. There were 71 different folks named for awards and it was my pleasure to hand out many of them at the dinner. If you were not there and you have an award coming, we will hand them out at the regular membership meetings. We have our spots at Dayton! We now know they are the same as last year's, 4007-4008. If you are going to be at Dayton, please volunteer to staff our spot for a bit. It gives you a chance to sit down and socialize with the shoppers. It is not too early to be thinking about Field Day. I am sure Dick WB4SUV will be looking for folks to help out. See you at our meetings. 73, Rick KD4PYR Next meeting This month our guest speaker is Joseph Sykes, Miami Township Trustee and past President of the Hamilton County Township Association. Mr. Sykes will address our membership on the import-ance of township government. The title of his presentation -- "Grassroots Government". We look forward to your participation and the exchange of knowledge, experience and fellow-ship. The next meeting of the OH-KY-IN Amateur Radio Society will be held on Tuesday, May 7, 2002 at the Western Hills Church of Christ, 5064 Sidney Road, one block from Glenway Avenue. To get to the meeting, coming from town on Glenway, pass Ferguson Road and turn left onto Sidney between the BP gas station and Sebastian's Greek restaurant, just before the Frisch's. Then turn right at the stoplight into the drive down to the church parking lot. The entrance is at the back of the church building. Plenty of parking is available. The meeting room is handicap-ped-accessible. See you there. 73, Phil KG8AP Minutes of members' meeting, Tuesday, April 2, 2002 Rick KD4PYR called the meeting to order at 7:35 PM with the Pledge of Allegiance and self-introductions. There were about 40 present. Guests were Holly KG4RXR and Mike KG4RXS Works. No health or welfare announcements. See Lynn WD8JAW to pay dues; renewals are just past due. Phil KG8AP opened the discussion program with the story about the rabbit hit by a car and revived with sprays of hare restorer with a permanent wave. Programs have been confirmed for May and June. Bob WA6EZV told those present that the future of two of our repeater sites is in jeopardy. Brian K4BRI noted that we don't presently pay for any of our sites; Dick WB4SUV said antenna sites usually rent for $300/month. In this context antenna lords have a better future than slum lords. Paul Wright KO8W is gone to Kalamazoo MI. Mt St Joe is subject to big OSHA fines for the antennas on the water tower, have contracted for work needed there to be done from a helicopter. Antenna still at new St Francis & George. Rick KD4PYR will ask about an antenna site at Federal Reserve, though that building isn't that terribly tall. Maybe an antenna on Elder HS? Tax write-off for a site on a high-rise would not be available, that isn't done. Carol WA8YL urged the support of all for our Hamfest; members should buy a tickets even if they can't attend. Also, the Awards Dinner is coming up on April 16, members should reserve if they haven't yet and wish to attend. Greg KA8MQD asked about problems with Bluetooth devices. Dick WB4SUV replied that type acceptance of software for software-defined radios is in the works. Jim KCV8PRY asked what about a club auction, or silent auction, like GCARA's recently. Percentage to the club, of course. It was asked if the Q-Fiver could be published in PDF on the website. Susie N8CGM will investigate. Program ended at 8:ok care of the liaison duties at Goodwill Headquarters. Rick for the most part operated the radio while Laurie was a direct runner between the radio communications table and the event control table. Rick and Laurie both worked with the computer that had the mapping program running to assist with finding the loading point that is closest to the various missed pick up addresses that came through. Jo did an excellent job again, as in previous years, of keeping a run-ning log of the communications activity as it was happening. As in the previous several years, yours truly operated from home as the Net Control Station using the OH-KY-IN K8SCH callsign on the net. We were again able to link up and assist with the event communications going on in Northern Kentucky this year. Although one loading point in Butler County did have some amateur operators that participated in the background of our net, no other radio activity was found for other Butler County or any of the Warren County loading sites. Of noticeable activity that went on during our net this year was that Goodwill Headquarters was contacted concerning a pick up of items that were not intended for Goodwill. A short time later, with the help of our radio communications, the black trash bags and several boxes that were filled with items intended for a garage sale, were returned to the owner. Another highlight was that John Schipp KC8TPN, who had just received his license two days before the event, after taking the OH-KY-IN classes, was participating on our net. I am very happy that I was his first contact. John is already studying for his general class ticket. He is just 12 years old !! The biggest highlight of this year's event was hearing Nick Clooney on the air on the 67 repeater, as third party traffic, giving his thanks to the amateur radio operators for their participation in the event !! Nick was the Honorary Chairman of the 2002 Scouting for Food and Clothing Drive. Pictured with Nick are Oh-Ky-In President Rick KD4PYR and daughter Laurie KF4YWG. Jo KD4PYS took the picture. There were 27 operators participating on the Cincinnati area net for the 2002 event. As usual, on behalf of the OH-KY-IN Amateur Radio Society, Ohio Valley Goodwill Industries, the Dan Beard Council of the Boy Scouts of America, the American Heritage Girls, the Free Store Foodbank, and the Emergency Food Center, I would like to thank the amateur radio operators listed below for their participation and support in helping to make the 2002 Scouting for Food and Clothing Drive a great success. I'll be looking forward to working with you again next year with the 2003 Scouting for Food and Clothing Drive event. 73, Bruce N8BV Tally west For the Oh-Ky-In April 6 foxhunt, Dick WB4SUV and Janie hid in the eastern part of McFarland Park near the end of a small street named Quante Lane. After the light snow the night before, we almost changed our plans, but it turned out to be a nice sunny day after all. We used twenty watts and a four element quad pointed SW for transmitter one, and had four low power transmitters nearby. The intent was to lure the hounds into the park through one of the main entrances off of Westwood Northern Blvd, which was about three quarters of a mile straight line to our location. There was one large valley in the middle that besides being a physical challenge created numerous reflections. Our deception worked; all four teams (seven hounds) made the trip through the woods. Janie then shuttled the hounds back to their vehicles as they finished. The results are as follows: Bob WA6EZV 52 min 13 miles Ernie W8EH 67 min 13.7 miles Brian K4BRI & Emily 94 min 10.7 miles *Matthew AA9YH & *Brach 125 min rode with WA6EZV Bill WD6ADM 152 min 19 miles *First time hunter Ernie W8EH will be the fox for the next hunt scheduled for May 11. 73, Dick WB4SUV Please mark your calendar for the 5th Annual Oh-Ky-In Hamfest on Sat. Operator Ed Giorgadze of the Republic of Georgia, has been active from the capital city of Pyongyang since early last November. Valid SSB contacts from the onset of the P5/4L4FN operation last fall now may be submitted for DXCC credit. "The ARRL has now received adequate evidence that the operation by Mr. Giorgadze is being conducted with the knowledge and approval of telecommunications officials in Pyongyang," said ARRL Membership Services Manager Wayne Mills N7NG. "At the present time, this approval is limited to SSB operation." Giorgadze has been operating with oral permission from North Korean authorities, but Mills said the ARRL is satisfied on the basis of written information submitted that the P5/4L4FN operation conforms with DXCC rules and should be accepted for credit. Mills cited DXCC Rule 7, which states "Any Amateur Radio operation should take place only with the complete approval and understanding of appropriate administration officials." The rule continues, "In any case, credit will be given for contacts where adequate evidence of authorization by appropriate authorities exists." Mills said the ARRL Awards Committee met and concurred that the operation should be accredited. The P5/4L4FN operation is not a DXpedition. Giorgadze is employed by the United Nations World Food Program and often spends as much as 12 hours a day on the job, operating in his off hours. According to The Daily DX, Giorgadze learned this week that he will be in North Korea at least until July 2003. He tried for more than two years to obtain permission to operate Amateur Radio and finally was given the okay last year to bring an ICOM IC-706MkIIG into the country. A favorite hangout has been 21.225 MHz (he works split and listens up). He's also been a frequent visitor to 10 meters. Now that his operation has been okayed for DXCC, Giorgadze has indicated that he plans to be more active on the air. While P5/4L4FN has been doing some RTTY operation in addition to SSB, those contacts are not yet being accepted for DXCC credit. Bruce Paige KK5DO has been acting as QSL manager and liaison for P5/4L4FN. He said this week that the first QSL cards should be going out within a few weeks. Paige offers an on-line log, additional news and information and a list of frequently asked questions (FAQs) about the operation on his AMSAT Net Web site . Click on the "P5 North Korea" link. Asked me if I knew any details. I hadn't heard this as a recent inci-dent. Any who has, please reply with details or at least what city in Ohio we are talking about. Joe K8QOE, The Head Gadinza of Ohio _______________________________ HI Joe, I caught a report on it on "American Stories" on CNN on Sunday afternoon. I tried a name search on QRZ, but didn't find a hit, so they may have gotten the name wrong. Here's what I remember: 83 year old Amateur Radio operator Melvin "Mac" MacKenzie (call not given), had climbed his tower to do some repairs, when he slipped, and wound up dangling backwards at the 75 foot level from his tower. He had been working alone, but thank God, he was wearing his safety belt. The fire department had to come and get him down, using the bucket truck. They quoted his wife as saying something to the effect that she was going to have the damn thing taken down. I thought the report said it was in Michigan; either Warren(?) township, or County. I did some searching online about it, but came up dry. Hope this helps. 73, John Myers KD8MQ BTW, I'm replying to all, in case this jogs anyone's memory. ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Hi Joe, Several weeks ago I did see a short story on the Cleveland TV news that a ham had taken a tumble from a tower.. But as I watched the story, the ham actually didn't fall.. He had been strapped to the tower by a safety harness and had just tipped over.. He was upside down dangling.. The fire department was called and they in turn had rescued him from the tower.. He was in his 60's - 70's.. All was well, the man was not hurt, just shaken up a bit.. They did have a short piece of film on it. No name, as I remember was mentioned, but he was suspended from about 60 feet for a couple of hours, most of it upside down. Scott Yonally N8SY ------------------------------------------------ Tempted to think this may become a widespread"urban legend". - Ye Ed Loads of honours at the April 16 Awards Dinner Rick KD4PYR announced that 71 pieces of wallpaper were made up for the dinner and subse-quent presentation. KD4PYS, KF4YWG, KG4BDO, KR8F, N8BV, N8YCL (also sweets award for Rachel and flower). The entire Education Committee each received a flower for their supporting spouses putting up with the annual 20-week teaching commitment and a meritorious service award plaque. Plaques also to N8CGM, N8KOJ and N8RVR, plus an "extra mile" ham keychain for him. Hamfest helpers Audrey Wilson and Nancy Seeger each received a certificate. WA6EZV got batteries as the 1st VXCC and plaque as Jan-June foxhunts winner. Besides the supporting spouse flower, WA8LOJ received an "extra effort" medal and the "canned ham of the year" award. A piece of wallpaper to WA8M; WA8YL was awarded an "extra effort" medal and a case of popcorn for the board meetings. WB4SUV snared the Jul-Dec foxhunts plaque as well as the Youth Involvement award; Janie got her very own fox plaque. N8BV noted that Nick Clooney thanked the Scouting for Food & Clothing communicators on the air, and there is a picture (see page 7 of print edition ). KD4PYR then gave KG8AP an armload of stuff as the club's "designated over-achiever". We usually don't start in earnest until later in the year, but last year we had no qualified nominees, and therefore no inductees in December, so we're soliciting nominations early. We intend to have a special induction at the upcoming GCARA picnic on July 24, 2002. Please note that the Hall of Fame, while sponsored by the GCARA, is open to members of any amateur radio clubs within 35 miles or so of downtown Cincinnati. The Hall of Fame recognizes Tristate radio amateurs who have performed meritorious service to amateur radio and/or have used amateur radio to serve the community. The entire article For the first time in the history of the Dayton Hamvention, a couple will exchange wedding vows at the show. Mark Elliot N8WZW and Cyndi Krieger will be married at Hamvention Saturday, May 18, at 3 PM in Forum Room 3. Licensed in 1993, Elliot is a member of OH-KY-IN Club and the Over 40 Club. Now a Technician, he's studying to upgrade to General. He and Krieger met through a mutual friend, and Elliot introduced her to Amateur Radio by taking her to a hamfest. Krieger now is studying for her license and may take the exam before Hamvention weekend. Why get married at Hamvention? The couple says they couldn't think of a better place to share their love for Amateur Radio -- and each other -- than by getting married at the world's largest Amateur Radio gather-ing. Dayton Hamvention is May 17-19.
