Lynn WD8JAW announced that our next Hamfest will be July 26, 2003. A preliminary flier is on the website. Local Interference Committee will meet again, Lynn seeks one other different forum. Flea market spaces will each be $1 regardless. Next Hamfest meeting at Carol WA8YL's on Nov. 12, look at effectiveness of mailing. Foxhunt: Dick WB4SUV reported that Bob WA6EZV was the most recent fox, ran a beginners' ARDF-style hunt. Chain link fence provided a lot of reflections. 5 teams took part, distances were really close. No Silent Keys report, thank heavens. Jim KC8PRY announced that the library had closed at 9 PM. Harry WA8LOJ reported for the ATV net that there were NO check-ins last week. He requested to back off & cut the net's run time to 7:30-8:30. No motion was made, but a mumble of general consent. Tech Talk: Phil W8RMJ of Amateur News Weekly has been ill again. Treasurer's report (the wrong one) circulated. Dennis KB8ROA reported for ARPSC that meetings are now in the Communications Centre. SET is this weekend. Lynn WD8JAW reported for QCEN that that there's a Red Cross open house for volunteers Saturday, the KY SET will be broadcast there. Brian K4BRI had nothing good to report for the Technical Committee. The recent climb & installation at Mt St Joe failed miserably. We may have to return to 9913 feedline. Committee will meet next Tuesday at 7:30 at Mt St Joe, help is needed. It's a "work in progress". Classes are in session, reported by Phil KG8AP: no Generals yet but a flock of Techs, some Extras. Dick WB4SUV reported on the ARDF Championship in Slovakia. He and Bob WA6EZV had an outstanding time, were generally pleased & did respectably. They found a source for 80m receivers for $16 + $4 s&h. Directions however are in Chinese. Bob WA6EZV has field-tested an example. 6 official letters of invitation need to be written. Judd N8RVR's pins for exchange worked very well. Harry WA8LOJ reported for equipment that since Bob WB8W is not teaching this term, we need the keyer back. Attendance award would have gone to Dennis KB8JVK, had he been present. As he was not, the sum will be $40 next time. Brian K4BRI brought up Sweepstakes in Nov. CW will be the first weekend, phone the 3d. Judd N8RVR's gear will be lent again. Robotics special interest group is meeting 3d Mondays at Phil KG8AP's. New business: Carol WA8YL is forming the nominating committee. Members can nominate from the floor in Nov. but must have the nominee's OK. Bob WA6EZV won split-the-pot, sum not clear. Brian K4BRI moved to adjourn at 9:23 PM, Judd N8RVR second, motion carried. Respectfully submitted, Susie Scott N8CGM, Recording Secretary OH-KY-IN ARS Robotics SIG OH-KY-IN now has a radio active robotics group. We meet the third Monday of each month at KG8AP's home. October 21st was our second meeting. We studied and tested some of the programs written for controlling movement and IR sensing. Come join us -- if you like experimenting with electronics, you are going to love robotics. 73, Dana WA8M DX Extras November 2002 Good News -- those of you who worked Ducie Island -- QSL cards are in the mail. Band conditions have been reasonably good the past few weeks with 10 meters showing signs of life along with the other bands. Let's hope they stay good for the November Sweepstakes opera-tions. Drop a line to Brian K4BRI to sign up for an operating time at his QTH. October saw some good operations including TX0AF Chesterfield, XL7C Chatham, S07l Western Sahara and CE0Z Juan Fernandez. Look for these operations in the near future and don't forget to check the DX columns for news on upcoming events. Taking the Amateur Radio Emergency Communication Courses is well worth the effort. I have completed the Level 1 course and am just about to finish Level 2. These courses provide an excellent framework to effectively use your radio skills in support of emergency communications. One lesson that these classes reinforce is to prepare and practice. So even if you don't go to the effort of taking a class, get involved and practice those skills. OH-KY-IN will provide an opportunity for you to practice your public service communication skills on a controlled net. We will again provide support for the Thanksgiving Day parade. Dennis KB8JVK will once again be organizing radio operators. Get involved, have a good time and be better prepared for an emergency. 73, Rick KD4PYR Next meeting Our guest this month is Mike Nie KB8VMX of the Green Township Fire Department. A big thank you to Bob Kreimer WB8JHT for arranging this special presentation. The next meeting of the OH-KY-IN Amateur Radio Society will be held on Tuesday, November 5, Election Day, at the Western Hills Church of Christ, 5064 Sidney Road, one block from Glenway Avenue. To get to the meeting, coming from town on Glenway, pass Ferguson Road and turn left onto Sidney between the BP gas station and Sebastian's Greek restaurant, just before the Frisch's. Then turn right at the stoplight into the drive down to the church parking lot. The entrance is at the back of the church building. Plenty of parking is available. Please vote before you come! We look forward to seeing you there. 73, Phil KG8AP --------------------------------------------------------------------------- Minutes of members' meeting, Tuesday, October 1, 2002 Rick KD4PYR called the meeting to order at 7:35 PM with the Pledge of Allegiance and self-introductions. There were 32 present, including guests: speakers Gary Johnston KI4LA, ARRL Great Lakes Division Director running for re-election, Joe Phillips K8QOE, OH Section Manager and John Haungs W8STX, Assistant Section Manager. The program was ARRL Night. Gary KI4LA led off by claiming that amateur radio will sell itself, and cited the students' repeater in Dallas. He urged everyone to be civil on the air - never know who's listening. We may get to keep 300 MHz of 40m, either 7.0-7.3 or 6.9-7.2. Worst case, only 7.0-7.1. Foreign broadcasters will neither move nor change their allocations. Greatest number of hams certified in ARRL courses come from OH. Emergency communications courses are now reimbursable. Go to arrl.org/cce for info. Sometimes certification seems almost more trouble than it's worth. We're getting a stamp of approval from the Feds via Homeland Security, in which certifi- cation is involved. New bands are coming - 136 KHz & 2.4 GHz are moving OK, 5 MHz is slow. HB 4720 will expand PRB-1 to cover CC&Rs. There are 27 co-sponsors. Write to your Representative to urge passage! We work for the agencies running the events we work, shouldn't try to tell them how to run their event. Gary KI4LA's presentation ended at 8:35 PM after queries. Joe K8QOE then took the floor. Banquets will return to Hamfests where possible, Saturday eve before a Sunday fest. New Central OH ASM is Bill Carpenter AA8EY. Section news will be provided to local newsletters, once it isn't to go into QST any more. Joe K8QOE's presentation ended at 8:47 PM. Business meeting convened at 9:07 PM. Bob W8CRO, trustee of the St Antoninus club station, thanked the club for the gift of the books. One of his students has passed the CW exam & is studying for General. 12-13 others are ready to start. Rick KD4PYR thanked Carol WA8YL for runni should be around to work some winter DX for a change. With cold weather coming, I hope all of you also find some time for the low bands. On a different note, plans progress for the 2003 ARDF championships next July. I hope all of you plan to volunteer for this high visibility event. We can use everyone's help! 73, Bob WA6EZV ARDF in 73 Magazine If you can lay hands on either the Nov or Dec issues of 73, there is a write-up of Slovakia in Nov & another write-up promised for Dec. Jim Weaver [k8je@arrl.net] * Monitors needed to track burrowing owl migration: For the 5th year in a row, volunteer monitors are needed to help determine the routes and winter destinations of the threatened burrowing owl. In past years, Amateur Radio operators have listened for tracking transmitters attached to the owls, which, as their name suggests, live in burrows in the ground rather than in trees. These efforts have helped scientists determine that owls hatching during summer months in the Canadian provinces of Saskatchewan and Alberta travel over the central states from North Dakota to Oklahoma and end up in southeastern Texas and northern Mexico. "They sometimes fly over 2000 miles to their winter homes," says ARRL Amateur Radio Direction Finding Coordinator Joe Moell K0OV. This fall the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences at the University of Arizona is asking hams to help track 53 transmitter-equipped owls from eastern Washington. "If you live in the western USA and can receive 150-MHz signals, you could help," Moell says. "Your scanner or ex-tended-range hand-held Amateur Radio transceiver plus an outside antenna are all you need to join in. If you have radio-direction finding equipment for VHF, so much the better." Moell's "Homing In" Web site has more information on this monitoring project, including frequencies and equipment and antenna suggestions. The site also tells how to join the BIOTRACKERS mailing list for the latest updates and discussions of wildlife-tracking topics.
